What do the Chinese see in Zimbabwe?

The manufacturing sector in Zimbabwe is diversified. Many different products are produced which absorb much of the agricultural and mining output. The main sub-sectors are beverages, metal products , chemicals and petroleum products and textiles.

Manufacturing is slowly picking up, having slowed down in the last decade. Most goods consumed in Zimbabwe at the moment are imported, coming mainly from South Africa and China. I may be biased, but Zimbabwe produces quality goods. Agricultural produce is ALL organic. Genetically modified produce is not allowed in Zimbabwe, so if you use quality raw ingredients, you get a quality product.

This sector is expected to grow. With a skilled and hardworking workforce, Zimbabwe is definitely a destination for your manufacturing. I am looking forward to the day when Zimbabweans consume Zimbabwean goods like we did ten years ago.

Some challenges faced by the manufacturing sector are infrastructure, power (electricity) and capital. The market for Zimbabwean goods is there. Zimbabwean companies are operating below capacity as they have been incapacitated over the last decade. This is another open door for those with an interest in manufacturing.

China has seen an opportunity and has taken it. I believe that is what the Chinese see in Zimbabwe, a diamond in the rough.
