South Africa is the only African country that funds its own research and development in house.

• Micro and Small businesses provided 35% of total employment, 22% of GDP in 2003.
• Small firms accounted for 16% of both jobs and production.
• Medium and Large firms accounted for 26% of jobs and 62% of production.

• 93 % of industrial firms are SME’s which account for 30 % of exports, 38% of production, 33% of investment and 46% of jobs.

SME’s employ 3.2mill people in 2003 and produces 18% of GDP.

SME’s account for 20% of value added.

SME’s account for 95% of formal manufacturing activity and 70% of industrial jobs.
