A US$5 million loan facility has been signed by the government and Arab bank for Economic Development in Africa. As a result US$500 000 small to medium enterprise fund has been launched in response to the needs of business by Oxlink Capital. It can be accessed by traders and business operating formally. The fund has flexible payment terms up to six months. Smaller businesses without collateral can access these loans by pooling together with other businesses.
This is great news as liquidity is a challenge for all businesses working in this sector. As usual I do not recommend borrowing as the best means to finance business. Loans should not be taken out, just because they are available but because there is no alternative means of meeting the funding needs of the business.
It is always important to investigate before taking out the loan, what are the terms, can you afford the payments and is this the best method of finance. There have been reports of people losing their houses after failing to pay back such short term loans, so do not go in blindly. Read between the lines and don’t just sign off your assets before doing your homework. When you fail to pay your property will be attached.
Hold back on the luxuries
Remember, the only time to get a loan is if the loan is going to make money for you! Don’t go buying a widescreen TV, or new wheels. Use loans responsibly.
A certain tobacco farmer was given a substantial amount of money to begin a farming venture. Instead of using this money to as agreed, he decided to buy himself a couple of fancy cars. When time came to pay the loan. He still failed to make things right after a second chance after which the donor demanded all his money back. What a wasted opportunity. Opportunity doesn’t often come twice. If it stares you in the face, grab it by the horns and don’t let any foolish decisions rob you of your opportunity.
Get the help you need
Our money management course and material are great, simple and effective. They will give you the tools you need. By managing your money weekly, ensuring that you have enough money to purchase your supplies and pay of your loan, you will be set for success. If you are not good with money get some help.

Hi, its very interesting but I’m in a fix maybe you can advice me. My dad has title deeds amounting to about USD1.9 million in value, they bring in a rental of only USD2400 since the bulk is in a 80ha piece of land that is in Ruwa. He doesn’t want to sell any property (and he is right)&i bank all the money into my account since he gave me the properties to manage and take the rent, the banks won’t give me a loan cause they say there are no guarantees since its not a salary&despite my dad saying I can use the title deeds, non bank avenues say they don’t want title deeds. And I need money just to build already approved facilities that will see the rentals, but I can’t because of lack of enough finance, the permits expire if you take long to build (one year in fact) and I have been banking consistently for over 8 months now. Any advice??

Hi I am Joe and my friend and I are so passionate about food particularly pastries. We desire to start a pastry shop were we concentrate on confectionary and even grow towa pizzaria. All we need to commence is a loan of abt $4000usd. We already have a place and manpower but all we need is that cash injection. If u cn help.

    • October 26, 2011 at 10:12 am

Thanks Joe. I like that you and your friend are passionate about the business you want to start. I always advise that you try and self finance, borrow from friends and family, use your savings or start small. You could possible start with catering for events as this doesnt requaire too much of cash injection. You can start from home and then grow from there. With time you can then open up you pizzaria. Please do, Zimabawe needs some good pizza and just good food in general. If you have a solid business plan, you can obtain finance through banks. They usually need collateral though. The Micro Mba(brought to you by PBA) hasa great plan for catering type businesses. Consider attending the Micro Mba.

i am already operating a small retail in harare.i need a loan to expand my business..help me with the procedures.

    • March 7, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Hi Archie. Congrats to you, you are up and running. The best place to start of with a loan is your local banker. As long as you aheva steady banking realationship, most banks are quite keen to give out loans. i hear that Barclays gives out the least loansa nd their requirements are quite tough, so if you bank with Barclays, you may want to try another less conservative bank. All the best.

My name is Alfred Hamah. I am an artist(sculptor). My problem is when it comes to news time we are said to be playing a very important role in tourism of this country but if we ask for cash loans we are looked down upon.
If we go to banks they say they only give loans to the youth & cevil servants. So non cevil sevants are not people? Most youths of today are found in pubs drinking thoz loans. If we go to sme they say go to min of educ sports & culture or Sedco where you can spend a lot of cash going up & down but ending up in a worse financial position than before.
Yu know yu will be shovelled till yu are tired. Other NGOs are also looking for youths under 24yrs saying they were disturbed during those days of Z$ inflation & strikes. Guys, who was disturbed a parent or a child
Other banks give v.short term loans with high interest rates. We are not vegatable sallers, gold dealers or Money changers.
During drought of late 2007-2009 most ple got into this business selling our products outside Zimbabwe, bringing mealie meal, rice, cash etc, sustaining their families.
Can yu please tell me where exactly we can get assisted. (CASH ASSISTANCE).

    • September 10, 2012 at 2:29 pm

@Alfred, this issue you talk about is what we find everyday. Loans, good loans that will develop business are very difficult to come by. The bank is probably the last place to go as you rightly said. So what can we do about this situation? In my view to operate in this business environment you need to be very very creative. zimdev/pba has toyed with the idea of giving loans, but how many can we give and to whom, will the business people be able to pay back, or will we just become loan sharks.
I wrote a post about multiple income streams, I think that creating multiple income streams may be a creative thing to do to increase earnings. This could be product development, increasing your product line, so that you can have different streams that bring in income. Instead of just selling art, which is your main line of work, you can sell other related or not so related goods, to keep the dollars rolling in. For instance you can sell coffee, snacks, to the people who come and buy art. Richard Branson does this so well, he’s in every business you can think of, some of the businesses are just to get the VIRGIN name out. Virgin is in the cola business, did you know virgin makes cola, yes, there is a virgin cola, virgin underwear, gyms, etc.

Hello Dustin, Where are you? Maybe large banks like the Development Bank, also consider, seed funding and so on. IF you are in Zim, I’m not sure if banks are giving out that kind of money.
