We are the world

‘We are everlasting debtors to known and unknown men. Whether we realise it or not, each of us are eternally ‘in the red’. When we rise in the morning we go into the bathroom where we reach for a sponge which is provided for us by a Pacific islander. We reach for soap that is created for us by a Frenchman. The towel is provided by a Turk. Then we sit on a table and drink coffee which is provided by a South American, or tea by a Chinese, or cocoa by a West African. Before we leave for our jobs we are indebted to more than half the world.’ Martin Luther King

I remember the immigration debate in the United Kingdom with the British people screaming for all the foreigners to go back to their countries. One wise person broke it down neatly. The person delivering your milk is foreign, the person baking your bread is French, the person serving you in Tesco is foreign, the person protecting your freedom and peace is foreign, the person making your meals is foreign and the person taking care of you in the nursing home is foreign.

‘If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other’. Mother Theresa.
