I have a dream

Martin Luther King, Jr., three-quarter length ...

We live in perilous times, faced by one natural disaster after another, floods, earthquakes, droughts are ravaging our continent. There is no letting up. Thing will probably continue to get worse, especially for disenfranchised poor in the Africa. The environment refuses to cooperate with us and our ideas and puts further strain on the existence of man on planet earth. It will take a long time to begin to see change. It will take a long time to bring economic change to the people. The poor will continue on a downward spiral unless we begin to look beyond ourselves, our big cars and picket fences. Someone on the other side of your town is going to bed hungry today, yet we can tuck in to our gourmet meals, eat a little, pick a little of that and throw the rest away, then we tuck ourselves into bed and have a good night’s sleep.

“Let me say that if you are tired of demonstrations, I am tired of demonstrating. I am tired of the threat of death. I want to live. I don’t want to be martyr. And there are moments when I doubt if I am going to make it through. I am tired of getting hit, tired of being beaten, tired of going to jail. But the important thing is not how I feel; the important thing is to get rid of the conditions that lead us to march.”Martin Luther King

I often feel this way, with a big elephant to eat, it seems like an insurmountable goal. A nation with 95% unemployment and graduates sitting at home with no hope for the future, it seems that we are just merely scratching the surface providing the service we provide. When facing a huge challenge, it is easier to ignore it and hope that someone else will deal with. We often ignore situations in front of us that we as individuals can actually change. Had the likes of Gandhi, Martin Luther, and Mandela ignored the situations they were confronted with, the world as we know it today would not exist. But we eat an elephant one bite at a time. Each bite we take will take us closer to the dream. It looks difficult and will cost us something we love dearly, but still, the drive towards a better world keeps pushing us on.

It is not important how I feel, the important thing is to get rid of poverty and give millions of Zimbabweans an opportunity to join the mainstream of the economy. We do not march and our lives are not in any danger, we do not face the threat of being beaten or going to jail, the only danger we face is that of getting accustomed to the problems around us and becoming complacent. There are people without a voice, without a champion, without someone crying on their behalf who need a hand up to come out of their situation. Most did not get there on purpose, they did not choose to be in that situation, the circumstances of their birth did this to them. They hope for a better life, but it far beyond their reach, unless someone takes up their cause. Without any money, the poor have no voice. Without someone fighting on their behalf, they will languish in abject poverty, generation after generation.

With the world economy in pain as it is, very little money is going to developmental causes. Europe tackles its Greek and Italy issues, America struggles with its own domestic issues and Africa is the least of the problems, they have always been there in any case. Out of all the little donor funding available, a miniscule amount makes its way to Zimbabwe. The poor do not understand world politics, economics, global warming or recessions, but all they know is they do not know where their next meal is coming from. You and me can make a difference, one person at atime.
