University of Zimbabwe comes 44th in African top University Lists

April 4, 2014

“The reputation of a university depends not on the number of its students or the splendour of its buildings, but on the quality of its members and the nature of its contribution to learning, “. These words by the former Australian Minister for Post-War Reconstruction, John Dedman. The latest university ranking for Africa by 4icu.org University Web Ranking places the Cairo University in Egypt as the top university to study in Africa, followed by the University of Cape Town. The list is shows stiff competition between Egypt and South Africa. There are many factors that make a good university. According to Forbes, a good university three factors distinguish top international universities from their competitors. The first: a high concentration of talented teachers, researchers and students.

Other factors such as employ-ability of graduating students, how long it takes them to get a job after completing their studies also contribute to this equation. We may love our University of Zimbabwe, but it scores in at number 44, followed by the University of Zambia. It might be better to go to Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria as it comes in at number 25.

A great university:
-Has a belief that argumentation rather than deference is the route to clarity
-Has an insistence that arguments stand or fall on their merits
-Is an organisation that fosters rigorous analysis of complex problems from multiple perspectives
-Embeds learning in a culture of inquiry and analysis, thereby offering the most empowering education to students irrespective of the path they may ultimately take.
-Has a commitment to attract the most original faculty and students, who can most benefit from, and contribute to, the university and its environment.
-Has a recognition that the universities contributions to society rest on the power of our ideas and the openness of our environment to developing and testing ideas.
