As we celebrate women this weekend, here is a list of powerful African women. This list only recognises ten women, but there are more powerful and influential women in the continent. Our women, mothers, sisters, grandmothers, aunties, teachers are the pillars of our society and we appreciate all of them this weekend.
African women have been sidelined from the mainstream of society for a long time. Africa has made great inroads to creating equal opportunities for women, but there is still a long way to go. One woman who isn’t on this list is Graca Machelle, former Presisdent Mandela’s wife, the only woman in the world to have been married to two presidents. She was made a British Dame by Gordon Brown and sits as on TheGlobal Elders. I vote her as a powerful woman because having her own works precede her, she could have bowed down from the work she does and gone into oblivion like the many former presidents wives.
