The Africa we love – Africa in Pictures

There are many great myths about Africa. Many still believe that Africans still live in trees and wear hides and skin. Common belief is that Africa is still a wild place where we wake up to play with lions. Many like to argue that only a few elite people live a normal life in urban areas, but that is not the case Two thirds of South African population live in urban areas, of Nigeria’s 175 million people and 87 million of them live in urban areas. In Namibia 38 % of its population is urbanised.

Admittedly, there are still poor communities and there is still a widespread prevalence of diseases plaguing the continent, but every country has its own challenges. Africa has grown ad changed from the Africa of the 19th century. the media has been known to sensationalise anything that happens in Africa. Hardly ever is the progress of Africa reported on. most reports focus on the wars, corruption and diseases. This is the picture that most westerners have of Africa. The media has done a great job in portraying the bad side of Africa. When one thinks about Ethiopia, automatically one think about a starving person, Rwanda gives images of tribal wars and South Africa conjures images of toitoi (black people protesting and dancing on the streets). Today Rwanda has a growing economy and is one of the cleanest places in Africa

I have travelled to few African countries, and my experience has been very good. I have never had to use a pit latrine or sleep in a hut or cave. Most hotel brands are well represented in Africa, Hilton, Sheraton, Intercontinental, and their standards are the same if not better than those found abroad.I am currently in Lagos and i should say that I had that impression that Lagos would be full of slums. Every country has its own slums and undesirable areas, save for a few like Singapore. On the whole, I love Africa and I look forward to travelling more around the continent and discovering new cultures and new worlds.
